Childhood & Early Life He was the fourth one among 5 children of Marianne and Bruce Hough, who were dancers. His father Bruce Hough was elected as chairman of the Utah Republican Party twice. Julianne also became an accomplished dancer and choreographer. Since his childhood, he participated in karate, acrobatics, and sports like football and basketball. When his parents separated, Derek was 12 years old, he was then sent to London to study under ballroom dancers Shirley Ballas and Corky Ballas. He spent ten years in London and studied at The Italia Kanti Academy of Theater Arts, where he trained in various dance forms including theater, gymnastics, songs and jazz, tap, and ballet. He formed a pop music trio named 2B1G (2 boys, 1 girl) to perform in dance competitions in the United States and the United States, along with Mark Balas, the son of his sister Julian and his tutors. He danced in the form of a child and went to learn under dance coach Korki and Shirley Ballas.

Being a professional dancer, he has participated in many competitions around the world and has traveled the world in places like Japan, Netherlands, Poland, Ireland, and Czechoslovakia. Derek Hough participated in several competitions between 1998 and 2004, that took him to several foreign nations like Japan, Netherlands, Poland, Ireland, the US, and Czechoslovakia. He won the WDSF World Youth Latin Champion in 2002, as well as the Under-21 Latin title at the Blackpool Dance Festival in 2003. Meanwhile, he made a guest appearance in the feature film 'Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone' in 2001. He became a part of a theatre cast by playing the lead in 'Footloose: The Musical' in 2006. However, after 4 years in 2010, he made his Broadway debut with 'Burn the Floor'. He was one of the panelists on the reality television show BBC One's 'DanceX' In 2007. The same year, he made his initial appearance at the Season four of the reality dancing show 'Dancing with the Stars', as a guest instructor and also he joined the crew as a professional instructor for the following season in that particular year. He was paired with actress Jenny Garth and reached the semifinals during both seasons. In the nine sessions of the show, he was paired with Joanna grace. However, he was eliminated in the fourth place in the semi-finals. For the next season (season 10), he partnered with singer Nicole Sherringer and he won the season finale. Derek Hough has been associated with the show 'Dancing with the Stars' for many years, including two seasons, season 12 and season 22. During this period he has partnered with television celebrities Maria Menounos, Paralympic Snowboarder Amy Perdie, Youtube's wildest Bethany Fat, Gymnast Nastia Lakhin and Wildlife Conservationist Bindi Irwin. He took a break from his reality show appearances to act in his debut feature film 'Make Your Move' In 2011.

Awards Derek Hough won the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Choreography for his work in 'Hey Pachuco/Para Los Rumberos/Walking on Air' in 2013. In 2014, The UCLA honored Derek and his sister Julianne Hough with the Kaleidoscope Award. In the same year, he was also honored with the GLSEN Inspiration Award. He won many awards for his work in 'Elastic Heart' (with Julianne Hough & Tessandra Chavez): Industry Dance Awards for America's Favorite TV / Film Performance as well as Prime Time Emmy Award for Outstanding Dance. In the same year, he was selected as 'America's Favorite Choreographer' at the Industry Dance Awards. In 2015, he was listed as a co-choreographer in 'MKTO's Classic', for which he achieved the World Choreography Awards for 'Television Live Performance'. Derek Hough won the Industry Dance Awards in 2016, for Favorite Dance Idol.
